Sebta: Moroccan Migrants Return Home After a Dangerous Crossing

After attempting to reach Sebta by land or sea, many Moroccan migrants have returned to Morocco. Their journeys highlight the dangers of irregular migration and the desperation of young people searching for better opportunities.

In recent days, numerous migrants—including young Moroccans and minors—have attempted to enter Sebta. Some tried to swim around the border, while others used makeshift flotation devices, putting their lives at serious risk.

Many were subsequently returned to Morocco because irregular entry does not automatically grant residency or access to mainland Spain.

Misleading messages shared on social media reportedly encouraged some of these attempts by suggesting that anyone reaching Sebta would be allowed to remain. Authorities have reiterated that such claims are false.

Beyond the border situation lies a deeper social challenge involving unemployment, insecurity and a lack of prospects. Preventing further tragedies requires fighting misinformation, protecting vulnerable young people and creating real opportunities in education, training and employment.

Irregular migration must not become the only hope for a generation seeking a better future.
